Success Through Goal Setting

by Brian Tracy

Becoming an expert at goal setting and goal achieving is something that you absolutely must do if you wish to fulfill your potential as a human being. Goals enable you to do the work you want to do, to live where you want to live, to be with the people you enjoy, and to become the kind of person you want to be. Yet, according to the best research, less than 3% of Americans have written goals, and less than 1% review and rewrite their goals on a daily basis. Why do so few people set goals? I think there are five basic reasons.

1. They are simply not serious. Whenever I speak with a man or woman who has achieved something remarkable, I learn that the achievement occurred after that person decided to "get serious." In other words, until you become completely serious and determined about your goals, nothing really happens.

2. They don't understand the importance of goals. We find that young men and women who begin setting goals very early in life invariably come from families in which the importance of goals is emphasized.

3. They don't know how to do it. One of the greatest tragedies of our educational system is that you can receive 15 to 18 years of education and never once receive a single hour of instruction on how to set goals.

4. Fear of rejection. The fear of rejection is caused by destructive criticism in early childhood and is manifested, in adulthood, in the fear of being criticized by others. Many people hold back from setting worthwhile goals because they have found that every time they do set a goal, somebody steps up and tells them that they can't achieve it, or that they will lose their money or waste their time.

5. Fear of failure - and this may be the most important reason of all. People don't set goals because they are afraid they might fail. In fact, the fear of failure is probably the greatest single obstacle to success in adult life. It can hold you back more than any other psychological problem.

If you can overcome all of these obstacles and set well-defined goals, it will enable you to channel your efforts and focus your energy toward something that's important to you.

Goal setting gives you a target to aim at and enables you to develop the self-discipline to continue working toward your target rather than becoming distracted and going off in other directions.

Let me share with you five keys that will help you do that. Each of these keys starts with one of the letters in the word "goals." Whenever you find yourself getting off the track, simply repeat the word "goals," and think about how each letter stands for a key that just might apply to your current situation.

The first letter is G, and it stands for "Get to it." Sometimes, the only difference between a successful person and a failure is that the successful person has the courage to get started, to do something, to begin moving toward the accomplishment of a specific goal.

The second letter, O, stands for "Opportunity." Successful people do not wait for opportunities to turn their goals into reality. They make their opportunities, because they are perfectly clear about the kind of life they wish to create. Once you have taken the time to decide exactly what you want, you will experience an endless flow of opportunities that will help move you in that direction.

The letter A stands for "Ability." Many people hesitate to set high, challenging goals because they lack the ability necessary to turn those goals into reality. But remember that we all lacked knowledge and experience when we started out in our careers or fields of expertise. Since you gain the ability necessary for high achievement through knowledge and experience, if you increase the speed at which you acquire both of those, you increase the speed at which you move ahead.

The letter L stands for "Leadership." Leadership is simply the ability to get results. And you begin to get results when you accept full responsibility for yourself, for your job, and for the outputs required in your position. You demonstrate leadership when you refuse to make excuses or blame anyone or anything for the problems you are having. The acceptance of the responsibility of leadership enables you to move ahead and take action.

The final letter, S, stands for "Stay with it." This is the resolution to persist in the face of adversity until you succeed. Between you and every goal that you wish to achieve, there is a series of obstacles. The bigger the goal, the bigger the obstacles. Your decision to be, have, and do something out of the ordinary entails facing difficulties and challenges that are out of the ordinary as well.

Sometimes, your greatest asset is simply your ability to stay with it longer than anyone else. When you look around you, you will see that all achievement is the triumph of persistence. You will see men and women everywhere who are struggling with and overcoming adversities in order to accomplish something that is important to them. And so can you.

G-O-A-L-S. That's what you have to remember. And "G" is the first thing: "Get to it!"

"I care about poetry as a place where people are still able to express powerful feelings, and this is rare.

It seems to me that the American language has been so riddled with post-modernism and irony that it is very difficult for people to gracefully express the fundamental loyalties and affections except in poetry.

In poetry it is still possible for people to express gratitude for the small blessings of everyday life and to express awe and wonder at the beauty of the natural world and express a kind of everyday passion for other people and for company."

What Do People Want That You Can Provide?

Spend a little time thinking about:

(1) Customer problems that need solutions,

(2) Problems with industry regulations,

(3) Changes in demographics, and

(4) Changes in population.

See how many ideas you come up with to apply these things to your business and life.

Is Cable and DSL the same?

Is there a such thing as DSL Cable? Does Charter sell both cable and DSL?

My freind says they have DSL Cable. No, Charter Cable sells DSL and Cable. They confirmed this by saying, "It's written on their cable bill".

After debate and agreement to disagree, I decided to confirm my response.

I thought to share my findings.

1) Cable and DSL are two very different services, using two different technologies. However, they have similar features and problems.

2) No, Charter does not sell both cable and DSL. Now, you have the answer and it should be worth a pack-of-cirgarettes.

You can verify my findings by searching the internet and inquiring by your local cable and phone companies.

Attorney-Client Confidentiality As a Marketing Strategy

"Historically, lawyers have liked to think of themselves as defenders of individual liberty against an overbearing state, primarily through traditional advocacy - that is, persuasively asserting a client's rights.

Today, lawyers' typical efforts to mediate between clients and state rely less on advocacy and more on information control.

This is a disturbing development; lawyers have brought to their new role as information guardians a powerful predisposition toward needless secrecy that suppresses and distorts information about many matters of public importance.

  • Never say anything to the police without talking to a lawyer first.
  • Never volunteer anything in a deposition.
  • Never try to explain or apologize when you are in an accident.
  • Don't talk to anyone about your civil case.

These canonical, something that is "canonical" (kuh-NON-ih-kul) conforms to orthodox or well-established rules, precepts serve to maximize the profession's influence.

Lawyers are excessively prone to advise confidentiality for the same reason that surgeons are excessively prone to advise surgery.

Confidentiality puts a premium on services and protections that lawyers are distinctively qualified to provide.

Website Owners

Why Linking to other sites is important.

Exchanging links (text and/or graphical) with other sites increases traffic in two ways...

1) Sending targeted (and non-competing) traffic to each other.

2) Inceasing link popularity ratings at the Search Engines.

A strong linking program is becoming more important...It is also the only way to get into engines like Teoma/Jeeves. (You cannot free-submit to Teoma/ Jeeves. Their spiders must find you, and they do that through following in-bound links.)

---------------------------------------------------------- Building a link program is only a very small part of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). And SEO is only a fraction of what's involved in building a successful online business.

"Linking!" presents the vital bigger picture required for building both targeted traffic (now and for years to come) AND long-term online profits and relationships.

Today's Message

With God ALL things are possible. Matthew 19:26

Victim - or - Victor?

"' the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might '" (vv.19-20,RSV)

-- For reading & meditation: Ephesians 1:11-23 Permit me to ask you:

What will the obstacles and opposition you meet do to you today?

Will they make you bitter or better?

The last word is not with them, but with you.

If your own concerns and interests are well and truly "dead", and you are committed to pursuing God's purposes, then the issue is not so much what your circumstances will do to you, but what you will do to your circumstances.

The Christian who understands this has the power to say to life - do your worst, I have the resources to take every negative and turn it into a positive.

Nothing successfully opposes the believer whose life is hidden with Christ in God.

Jesus once faced great opposition in His ministry: "They were filled with madness, and began to discuss with one another what they should do to Jesus" (Luke 6:11).Here was opposition in its most terrifying form.

What did Jesus do? Listen again to the Weymouth translation: "About that time He went out ' into the hill country to pray" (v.12). Prayer, that powerful means of communicating with God and controlling, not so much the situation as the outcome of the situation, made Jesus, not a victim, but a victor.

One of the major purposes of God seems to be that of producing character in His children. Not their ease, not their happiness - except as a by-product - but their character.

And how is character produced? One way it is produced is through overcoming difficulties.

So don't groan at the obstacles and opposition that face you today - grow in them. They help to sharpen your character - and your wits!

With all the change in my life, how can the Bible help me keep it all together?

"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose. " Romans 8:28 NLT

God can work His will even through traumatic, unpredictable, and unfair change.

PRAYER: O God, forgive me that so often I cry to You for tasks equal to my powers. Help me to pray instead for power equal to my tasks. I ask this, not for my sake, but for Yours. In Christ Name. Amen.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Why the World Is Upside Down

Jesus taught us how to forgive out of love, how to forget out of humility. So let us examine our hearts and see if there is any unforgiven hurt - any unforgotten bitterness!

It is easy to love those who are far away. It isn't always easy to love those who are right next to us. It is easier to offer food to the hungry than to answer the lonely suffering of someone who lacks love right in one’s own family.

The world today is upside down because there is so very little love in the home, and in family life.

We have no time for each other. Everybody is in such a terrible rush, and so anxious…and in the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world.
