Ramadan 2009Time of Renewal of One's Spirituality!I have heard about it, but Ramadan has never struck me the way it has this time. Seems like a great way to remind and renew one's spirituality and I have enjoyed learning about it. I imagine Ramadan is like revival in America, except revivals are held at different times, depending on the church.
Given the enormous challenges posed by our materially dominated societies, temptation abounds and the task of self-renewal comes with increasing difficulty. Today, people's pockets are empty, resources are short and the economic crisis has overpowered everything. Prices are at the highest levels; most people can no longer afford them. Islam follows a lunar calendar, so the start of the holiday is determined by the appearance of the new moon. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan 2009 begins on 22 August through 19 September. Celebrations include dawn to dusk/sunrise to sunset, fasting and time-honored rituals. Ramadan will conclude with a celebration, Eid al-Fitr/Eidul-Fitr. On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama marked the start of Ramadan by extending best wishes to Muslims and hope for a more peaceful and secure world. Today, I too would like to join with the 1.5 billion Muslims around the world – families and friends – in welcoming the beginning of Ramadan, and wishing us a blessed month. May God’s peace and prosperity be upon us. Gone Green!--Your inner voice.com |
