Superior vs. Inferior
This is Art with a good friend, upset about a little situation. It is not really worth talking about to me, but it was with my friend. You never know and this is what he said.
Yesterday, I was down at the river and I met my black fishing buddy. He asked me, how is it going? I replied, I got a job doing "Nigger work".
He said what do you mean by nigger work, we got a black president?
Well, it embarrassed me. I felt so low down I cried.
Today, I saw him at McDonalds and he did not even speak. I wished I had said "dirty work or flunky work" instead. Maybe he would not have been so offended. I apologized but he said do not apologized because you know what you meant.
What does all this mean?
This day he must have been in a bad mood, because we usually joke like that. I would love to apologize because I did not mean it like that.
Art here: Well, it has been a long time since I have heard work being described in this fashion. I agree, an apology would have done this man no good, because this man was already set to explode when anybody said something like that.
How can this man get mad for using the same language he uses? How do you know what is the right language.
Things like this happen all the time, Racial and Gender jokes, bosses shouting and cursing their employees and micro-management. It is that lethal combination of stress and ignorance vs. aimng to please and innocent mistakes - Superior vs. Inferior. Do you call your boss Mike or Mr. Woodard? Why?
If we are not educated and can freely talk and respect each other, it is never going to die. The mission at hand goes out the window and now emotions are the top priority.
In your face or behind your back, how easy is it for someone, anyone to say something that will ultimately offend one out of every ten? How easy is it to be offended by what somebody said? Is that the reason why our Ten Commandments, Prayer, Christmas... Where does this stop and maturity start? Nigger work!
